Vancouver, WA: The C-TRAN Board of Directors unanimously approved a Locally Preferred Alternative for the Mill Plain BRT project on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone as the project moves into its second phase.
Under the adopted Locally Preferred Alternative, the new bus rapid transit line would travel along Vancouver’s Mill Plain corridor, extending on East Mill Plain Boulevard to a new transit center near 192nd Avenue, and to downtown Vancouver via Evergreen Boulevard. Mill Plain would be C-TRAN’s second BRT line after The Vine, which began operating on Vancouver’s Fourth Plain corridor in 2017.
“The Mill Plain BRT project will deliver on our mission of connecting people to opportunities, supporting economic vitality and enhancing quality of life in this great community,” said C-TRAN CEO Shawn M. Donaghy. “We’re grateful to the board, the Federal Transit Administration and all of our partners as we advance this project and build on the success of The Vine.”
The Locally Preferred Alternative was developed through an extensive public outreach process that included multiple open house meetings, a Corridor Advisory Committee, a Technical Advisory Committee and hundreds of comments from the public. C-TRAN also directly contacted hundreds of businesses and residents along the entire corridor.
The Mill Plain BRT project now moves into phase two: a period of more detailed design known as project development. Last month, C-TRAN received authorization from the FTA to move into project development. On Tuesday, the board also approved a contract with HDR Engineering to continue to work with C-TRAN on the Mill Plain BRT project into phase two. Construction could begin in 2020 or 2021. The system could begin operation in 2023.
BRT uses a combination of features to create a faster, more efficient and reliable transit service for the corridor it serves.
