Vancouver, WA: C-TRAN has been named the 2022 North American Transit System of the Year by the American Public Transportation Association. It’s the second time that C-TRAN has received the transit industry’s highest honor.

The honor was officially announced this month as part of the annual APTA Awards, which recognize transit systems across North America. As a winner of the Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award, C-TRAN was judged among other systems of a similar size. C-TRAN also received the Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award in 2019.

The award encompasses C-TRAN’s achievements during the past three years in 12 core areas: safety, operations, maintenance, access, diversity/inclusion/equity, customer service, financial management, sustainability, workforce development, attendance/employee costs, marketing and community relations.

“This is an incredible honor, and I’m extremely proud of our employees who selflessly serve our amazing community each and every day,” said C-TRAN CEO Shawn M. Donaghy. “To be selected for this award twice is nothing short of a thrill, yet humbling. We take tremendous pride in the work we do, and it’s a reminder that public transportation is much larger than routes and schedules. It’s about relationships. It’s about community engagement. It’s about providing access to opportunities, and doing everything we can to make Clark County a better place to live.”

From 2019 to 2021, C-TRAN marked several key achievements that were factored into the award selection. During that time, C-TRAN:

  • Navigated the COVID-19 pandemic while keeping and expanding our Local bus service —a crucial step to allowing essential workers and others to keep moving, and keep a safe distance with other safety measures in place.
  • Broke ground on our second branch of The Vine, soon to bring enhanced bus rapid transit service to Vancouver’s Mill Plain corridor.
  • Took important steps forward in sustainability by becoming a certified green business through the Clark County Green Business program in 2019.
  • Received a finding a “no deficiencies” from the Federal Transit Administration’s triennial review covering this three-year window. A perfect result is a rare feat achieved by only a small percentage of agencies who undergo a triennial review.
  • Continued to operate as a financially healthy, debt-free agency.

The APTA Awards highlight the best of public transportation in North America each year. C-TRAN and the rest of this year’s award winners will be honored at APTA’s national TRANSform conference in October.
